A virtual Museum of Flip Animation dedicated to pre-cinema motion picture techniques and devices has opened in the online world of Second Life. Appropriately, the museum was created by Flippies Custom Flip Books, the company that has recently given flip books a real-world second life as a modern day promotional marketing tool.

The two-story museum features a full range of interactive educational exhibits including pre-cinema motion picture devices such as zoetropes and thaumatropes. There’s also a flip book machine that plays back viewers’ choice of simulated flip books with a simple click-of-the-mouse. Additionally, videos of modern day flip books created by Flippies can be viewed on plasma television monitors throughout the museum, and there’s even a museum shop where Second Life members can pick up free museum t-shirts and postcards.

“As a long-time collector, being the curator of a museum dedicated to the art of flip animation has always been a dream. Second Life has made it possible for that dream to now become reality.” said Jeffrey Kay, President of Flippies, a manufacturer of custom flip books. “The museum is not just educational, but it’s also quite fun because all of the devices on display actually work. Most importantly, all of the physics of flip-animation, including persistence of vision, are incredibly accurate and realistic in Second Life.”

Recognized as one of the earliest forms of interactive multimedia on record, flip books are now coming back into style. “In this age of high tech interactive multimedia, ironically including platforms like Second Life, the simplicity of flip-animation is not only refreshing but its illusion is even more captivating than ever,” said Kay, who produces millions of custom flip books annually for businesses who use them primarily as interactive brochures, promotional premiums and product demonstration tools.
